May 1, 2008
SEATTLE - Washington women's tennis head coach Jill Hultquist announced the signing today of elite junior tennis player Samantha Smith to a letter of intent. Smith has been ranked among the Top-25 juniors in her age group for several years.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Smith reached a high of No. 25 in the national rankings of current high school seniors according to tennisrecruiting.net. Since 2005 Smith has been ranked as high as No. 15 in the nation for her age group.
'Samantha is a fighter on the court and we look forward to her being a big part of our team next year,' said Hultquist. 'We had some big shoes to fill with Tara Simpson and Allison Rainey graduating, but we think we have done a good job of replacing their talents.'
Smith joins Denise Dy from San Jose, Calif. as Washington's class of 2008-09.
The Huskies, already a young and talented squad, will get even younger next season. They will likely have no senior starters, two juniors, and a wealth of sophomores plus the two incoming freshmen.
The current women's squad is preparing for its first NCAA appearance in three years. The Huskies face Texas A&M in the first round on May 9 in Palo Alto, Calif. at the regional hosted by Stanford.
