Washington Hangs On For 5-4 Win Over USC
May 2, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Brian Pearl came in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and got Grant Green to fly out as the Washington Huskies held on for the 5-4 win over the USC Trojans in Pac-10 Conference action. The Trojans scored two runs against reliever Nick Haughian before Pearl came in to earn his second save on the year.
Washington improved to 26-16 overall and 6-7 in Pac-10 play while USC fell to 21-23 overall, 7-9 in conference.
Kyle Conley led the Huskies with a 4-for-4 night, hitting two doubles and recording two RBI. Jorden Merry remained perfect at 7-0, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. USC starter Tommy Milone (5-4) took the loss, throwing eight innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The Huskies scored an unearned run in the first when leadoff hitter David Bentrott hit a ground ball through the legs of USC third baseman Joe De Pinto. Conley's RBI single later scored Bentrott. USC tied the game in the second with Anthony Vasquez hit his fourth homer of the season with a solo shot to right.
With two outs in the third, Bradley Boyer tripled home Michael Burgher for the go-ahead run. Aaron Russell followed with an RBI single before Conley's RBI double made it a 4-1 lead for the Huskies. Merry was able to keep the Trojans hitless through four consecutive innings.
After Washington scored a run in the top of the ninth, the Huskies brought in Haughian to close out the game before facing the Trojan rally. Pinch hitter Keith Castillo doubled down the first base line and three walks by Haughian would load the bases and force in a run. Haughian then hit Nick Buss with a 1-1 pitch, making it a 5-4 lead before Pearl entered the game. Green, who extended his career-high hitting streak to 19 games, lifted Pearl's first pitch to center as Burgher registered the final out.
The series continues tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com with a video webcast, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
