May 3, 2008
SEATTLE - Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 15 to lead the 12th-ranked Wildcats past No. 23 Washington, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Pac-10 Conference softball action.
Mowatt sat the Huskies down in order in six of the seven innings and improved to 20-12.
Arizona (32-16, 9-8 Pac-10) scored all three of its run in the third inning. Stacie Chambers had an RBI-single to bring in the Wildcats first run, and then Arizona tacked on two more unearned runs later in the inning.
Washington (26-20-1, 5-11 Pac-10) threatened in the second after Alicia Blake and Bailey Stenson had back-to-back singles to start off the inning. With one out Morgan Stuart was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Mowatt got the next two Husky hitters out on strikeouts to leave the bases loaded.
The hits by Blake and Stenson were all the Huskies could manage off of Mowatt, who walked just one batter. Blake's single extended her hitting streak to five games.
Caitlin Noble pitched no-hit ball over the final two innings for the UW after coming on in relief of Aleah Macon. Noble struck out three, while Macon (15-13) struck out five and allowed six hits and four walks in five innings of work.
Arizona finished with six hits in the game, with Cyndi Duran going 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
