Dawgs Finish Sweep With 11-4 Win At 'SC

May 4, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Andy Lentz went 5-for-5 and Kyle Conley capped a big weekend with two hits and four RBI as the Washington completed a three-game sweep of USC with a 11-4 win Sunday at Dedeaux Field.

The sweep was the Huskies' first-ever over USC in Los Angeles and their first Pac-10 sweep since the first weekend of Pac-10 play last year at Washington State.

Conley went 8-for-10 with nine RBI, three doubles, a triple and two home runs for the weekend. He also walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Husky starter Nick Haughian (5-4) worked five innings for the win, allowing an unearned run on only two hits.

Washington (28-16 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-10) took a quick lead, scoring three runs with two outs in the first inning. With the bases loaded on a single, a walk and a hit batter, Brian Pearl was hit by a pitch to force in one run. First baseman Troy Scott, who went 3-for-5, followed with a two-run single up the middle and the UW lead, 3-0.

In the second, UW shortstop David Bentrott missed hitting a home run by about a foot, but settled for a double off of the top of the fence in center. He came around to score on a single from Bradley Boyer, increasing the lead to 4-0.

Conley continued his hot-hitting weekend in the fourth when his two-run double down the third-base line made it a 6-0 lead ended the day for USC starter Ryan Cook. Conley went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple Friday and was 2-for-3 with two homers Saturday.

USC (21-25 overall, 7-11 Pac-10) scored its first run in the fifth. Nick Buss walked and took second on an errant pickoff attempt and then scored on a single from Derek Perren, making the score 6-1.

Washington tacked on two more in the sixth as Conley and Ty Rasmussen each drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Washington got three more as Lentz's fourth single of the day scored one, a Boyer sacrifice fly sent in another and a single from Conley drove in the third.

In the bottom of the seventh, USC sophomore shortstop Grant Green tripled to drive in the Trojans' second run. The triple was the 14th of his career, breaking the USC record. In the eighth, third baseman Billy Pinkerton homered for the Trojans.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Portland for a non-conference game Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Next weekend, Washington State comes to Husky Ballpark for the Apple Cup of baseball, a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
