No. 16 Cal Baseball Loses to No. 20 Arizona, 16-5

BERKELEY, CALIF. - No. 20-ranked Arizona was able to salvage the third game of the three-game Pac-10 series versus No. 16-ranked California, defeating the Golden Bears, 16-5, Sunday at Evans Diamond. Five Cal pitchers gave up 16 runs and 18 hits to the Wildcats in the final game of the series Sunday, but the Bears had topped Arizona, 11-5 on Friday, and 6-5 on Saturday, to win the series. Cal dips to 29-15-2 overall and 9-9 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats improved to 31-15 and 8-10 in conference play.
Arizona was also bolstered by the strong pitching of left-hander Eric Berger, who improved his record to 5-3 by throwing 5.0 innings with three hits, one run, five walks and six strikeouts. Middle reliever Daniel Schlereth also threw well for the Wildcats (2.0 innings, no hits, no runs, four strikeouts). The losing pitcher for the Bears was senior right-hander Alex Rollin (4-2, 4.1 innings, eight hits, five runs, two walks, four strikeouts).
Arizona jumped out to an early lead by scoring a run in the top of the first on Brad Glenn's RBI double, and three runs in the top of the third on C.J. Ziegler RBI single and T.J. Steele's two-run single. Cal got within 4-1 with a run in the fourth on junior shortstop Michael Brady's RBI triple.
But after the fourth inning it was all Arizona as the Wildcats scored 12 more runs off of five Bear pitchers with top hitters being Colt Sedbrook (5-for-6, 2B, four RBI) and Mike Weldon (2-for-3, 2B, five RBI). Cal finished with seven hits with seven different players getting one hit apiece. Sophomore right fielder Blake Smith had a two-run triple in the eighth inning, while junior first baseman David Cooper hit his Pac-10-leading 18th homer of the season with a solo shot in the ninth inning.
The Bears will next host UC Davis in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, May 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal will return to Pac-10 play when the travel to Stanford for a three-game series against the Bay Area rival Cardinal beginning Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
