UCLA Baseball Drops Series Finale to No. 4 Arizona State, 11-8

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball team lost the series finale to No. 4 Arizona State, 11-8, Sunday afternoon at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The visiting Sun Devils (37-8, 12-6 Pac-10) belted six home runs and broke a 7-7 tie in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs, to earn the series victory over the Bruins (24-20, 7-8 Pac-10).
ASU third baseman Brett Wallace broke the 7-7 deadlock, ripping an RBI-single to center field with one out in the top of the ninth off right-hander Brandon Crawford (1-1) to send home left fielder Ryan Sontag. Wallace finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers, three runs and four RBI. Following one walk and one base-hit, catcher Petey Paramore belted a three-run home run to right field, extending the Sun Devils' lead to 11-7.
Arizona State right-hander Tommy Rafferty (10-0) earned the victory, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4.2 innings of relief. Crawford absorbed his first collegiate loss on the mound, surrendering four runs and two hits in one inning of relief. UCLA right-hander Jason Novak hurled three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, scattering three hits while recording three strikeouts.
UCLA was led at the plate by second baseman Alden Carrithers, who went 3-for-4 with one run, one RBI and one walk. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis was 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI. Center fielder Tim Murphy went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and right fielder Brady Dolan went 2-for-5 with two runs.
Arizona State received two home runs from Wallace, back-to-back long balls from first baseman Mike Leake and second baseman Raoul Torrez, a solo blast from center fielder Jason Kipnis and a three-run shot by Paramore. Kipnis went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Paramore finished the afternoon going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
In a closely-contested ballgame, UCLA took the first lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Curtis led off the frame with a single and scored from first on a double to left-center field by Carrithers.
Arizona State belted three home runs in the top of the fourth to assume a 4-1 advantage. Leake and Torrez led off the frame with back-to-back solo homers. Kipnis reached on a two-out infield single and scored on Wallace's ensuing two-run homer.
The Bruins reduced Arizona State's lead to 4-3 with two runs in the fourth inning. With runners at the corners after a fielding error by Sun Devil shortstop Marcel Champagnie, Murphy grounded a single into left field, sending home shortstop Brandon Crawford and advancing Dolan to third. A groundout by catcher Ryan Babineau scored Dolan.
The Sun Devils expanded their cushion to 7-3 with a three-run fifth inning. Kipnis belted a two-run homer to right-center field and Wallace followed with a solo blast to center field on the next pitch.
UCLA responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Left fielder Blair Dunlap led off the frame with a bunt single and moved to second base on a base-hit to center by Carrithers. With one out, Crawford was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Designated hitter Mickey Weisser blooped a single to left field, scoring both Dunlap and Carrithers.
The Bruins tied the contest, 7-7, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Crawford drew a one-out walk, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Weisser and scored on an infield single by Dolan. Murphy followed with a two-out double to deep center field, advancing home Dolan to tie the game.
UCLA produced an opportunity to score in the bottom of the eighth inning yet came up short. With two outs, Carrithers drew a five-pitch walk and advanced to third base on a single to left field by first baseman Casey Haerther. Following an intentional walk to Crawford, shortstop Niko Gallego grounded out to first base on a check swing.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, UCLA added its eighth run of the day on a two-out RBI-single by Curtis, sending home Babineau.
The Bruins return to action against No. 8 San Diego on Tuesday, May 6. Game time at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. Admission to Tuesday's contest for adults and children costs two dollars.
Game Notes: Alden Carrithers logged his team-leading 19th multi-hit performance of the season, going 3-for-4 with one walk...Jermaine Curtis, who finished 3-for-6, registered his 14th multi-hit game...Bruin starter Gavin Brooks allowed seven runs (six earned) and nine hits in 4.1 innings and struck out seven hitters...Sun Devil starter Seth Blair surrendered five runs (three earned) and seven hits in 4.1 innings.
