Morgan Again Breaks School Pole Vault Record at Payton Jordan Cardinal Qualifier
May 4, 2008
STANFORD - Junior Katie Morgan once again set the school record in the women's pole vault today at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Qualifier at Cobb Track & Angell Field on the Stanford campus. Morgan posted a mark of 13-6.25 (4.12m), surpassing her old record-setting mark of 13-5.75. Morgan's first-place finish was one of 11 event victories that California posted.
Junior Artensia Young and sophomore Mercedes Marchbanks each notched NCAA regional-qualifying marks and personal bests in the women's triple jump. Young posted a score of 41-6.00 (12.65m), which is also the fifth best in school history, while Marchbanks recorded a 40-9.75 (12.44m), the eighth-best mark in school history.
Freshman Cherrelle Garrett clocked a regional-qualifying time in the women's 200 meters, earning a time of 23.88, a new personal best and the seventh-best time on Cal's all-time list. Junior Evelyn Smith, already a regional qualifier in the 400-meter hurdles, reached a new PR in that event with a time of 59.73. Both Smith and Garrett also took first in those events.
The Cal men, currently ranked No. 24, also had success in the hurdles, as junior Jordan Paul clocked a new personal best in the 110-meter hurdles as did junior Jake Hanson in the 400-meter hurdles. Both Paul and Hanson had previously set regional-qualifying times in those events. Paul recorded Cal's fifth-best time in school history in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.78. Hanson crossed the finish line in first place in the 400-meter hurdles at 50.77.
Senior pole vaulter Donny Appanaitis, who also has already regionally qualified in that event, improved his personal best to 16-7.50 (5.07m), taking top honors in the event.
The Bears also earned two more regional qualifiers in the 5000 meters as sophomore Yosef Ghebray and freshman Kari Karlsson each posted qualifying times. Karlsson clocked a 14:07.13 and Ghebray crossed the finish line at 14:10.11.
Cal will compete in the Pac-10 Mult-Event Championships from Friday, May 9, to Saturday, May 10, in Tempe, Ariz., as well as the 67th Coca-Cola Modesto Relays next Saturday.
