Cougars Set to Face No. 27 Louisiana State in NCAA Tournament First Round

This Week - The Washington State University tennis team (16-9 overall, 2-6 Pac-10), ranked No. 42 (ITA) nationally, will travel to Berkeley, California to compete in the 1st/2nd Rounds of the 2008 NCAA Championships, May 9-10.

2008 NCAA Tournament - For the first time since the 2002 season, the Cougars will participant in the NCAA tournament...WSU will face No. 27 Louisiana State (14-9) in its first round match, May 9...this marks the first meeting between the two schools...also competing in Berkeley will be No. 8 California (16-5), which hosts Army (25-7) in another first round of the first-round matches will meet Saturday, May 10 in second-round action with the winner advancing to Tulsa, Okla., site of the NCAA Tournament finals, May 15-18...the appearance also marks the first for Cougar Head Coach Lisa Hart, who is in her fifth season guiding the WSU.

NCAA History - This years marks the fourth time in the school's history that the Cougars have advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and the first since the 2002 season...WSU is 1-3 in NCAA Championship play, defeating Indiana, 4-0 in 2001, for its only victory...the Cougars also made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002 and 1999.

Winning Ways - Senior Ekaterina Burduli continues her journey as the all-time wins leader at WSU...Burduli earned one victory this weekend improving to 28-9 on the season...the 28 wins is the most she has recorded in her four years at WSU and is stands as WSU's single-season record...this is the third straight season Burduli has recorded 20 or more wins...she extends her school-record to 91 career victories.

Team Wins - With its season-ending win over rival Washington, WSU earned its 16th victory of the season, the most wins in a season under Hart and the third straight season of 14 or more wins.

Rankings -WSU holds a current ranking of No. 42 according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association...senior Ekaterina Burduli has earned a No. 47 ranking according to the ITA.
