Arizona's Roth, Stanford's Penna Named Pac-10 Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA junior Laine Roth has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for May 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Roth, a Glendale, Ariz. native, went 4-for-8 (.500) for the weekend, helping the No. 11/9 Wildcats end the regular season with a sweep of No. 8/8 Stanford and No. 23/25 California.

On Thursday, Roth had an RBI base hit in the first inning, scoring one of only two Arizona runs on the night in a 2-0 shutout of California. On Friday, Roth walked in the first inning and capped the game with a sixth-inning solo home run to left-center to give the `Cats the 8-0 run-rule victory over Stanford.

The final game of the regular season saw Roth's offense pick up even more as she started off with a long ball in the first inning on Saturday. Later in the game, Roth tallied a run after a base hit as Arizona went on to win its fifth straight game, 6-1.

Roth saw her overall batting average rise to the team lead at .368. She also leads the team in slugging percentage (.825) and home runs (15).

Arizona will face a difficult weekend of travel, even after garnering the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, as it heads to Hempstead, N.Y. and the regional hosted by Hofstra.

This is the first Player of the Week honor for Roth in her career. The accolade is the 111th for the Arizona softball team.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD junior Missy Penna has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for May 6-12, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

In one thrilling night, Penna struck out a school-record 17 batters, broke the school's single-season strikeout record, matched Stanford's single-season win record and carried the Stanford softball team to a 2-1, 10-inning upset of No. 2/2 Arizona State in Tempe on Thursday.

Penna earned her league-leading 34th win of the year in the upset, matching Dana Sorensen's single-season win record from 2004. Her 17 K's bested the previous single-game record of 16 set by herself in 2007 and Sorensen in 2001, and moved her past the school's single-season strikeout record to a new mark of 370.

With the lead in the bottom of the 10th and nearly 200 pitches thrown, she struck out the side for the third time in the game and finished off the incredible night in perfect fashion.

Penna completed the Pac-10 season having pitched more innings than any other pitcher in the league, including 18 complete games in Conference play.

Stanford, as the No. 12 seed, now faces the unenviable task of heading across the country to open the NCAA Tournament in Amherst, Mass. at the regional hosted by the University of Massachusetts where it will face Lehigh in its opening game Fri., May 16.

This is Penna's fourth career Pitcher of the Week honor and the 37th all-time award for the Stanford softball team.
