Murphy Delivers in Extra Inning Win Over Gonzaga
May 13, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - Jim Murphy drove in two runs with a two-out double in the top of the 11th inning to lift Washington State to a 7-5 victory over Gonzaga in nonconference baseball at Patterson Baseball Complex, Tuesday.
Murphy's game-winning hit was his second double of the game and capped a three-RBI night. The senior moved into seventh place on the Washington State (28-22) all-time RBI list with 154.
Gonzaga (28-22) threatened its half of the 11th off Ross Humes (4-3). Michael Rhodes and Evan Wells collected back-to-back infield hits to put runners at first and second. Marcus McKimmy was unsuccessful in two bunt attempts before grounding into a double play. Humes hit Drew Heid on a 2-2 pitch to put runners at the corners, but came back to retire Ryan Wiegand on an over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left field by third baseman Paul Gran to end the game. Humes was the last of six Cougar relievers who combined to blank the Bulldogs over the final 10 and 2/3 innings.
The Bulldogs took advantage of some wildness from Washington State starter Connor Lambert to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A pair of walks sandwiched around a hit batter loaded the bases and Wiegand singled home a pair of runs to put Gonzaga on top 2-0. An out, walk and hit batter made the score 3-0 and ended Lambert's night. Chad Arnold came on and uncorked a wild pitch to bring in a run and Brett Nicholas drove in a run with a ground out to increase the Gonzaga's lead to 5-0.
The Cougars chipped away at the Bulldogs' lead with two runs in the second. Jared Prince led off with a double and came in to score on a one-out double by Scott Suttmeier. After Greg Lagreid singled to put runners at the corners, Matt Fanelli delivered a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2.
Prince led off the sixth with his sixth home run of the season and Washington State scored twice in the seventh inning to tie the game 5-5. Shea Vucinich and Travis Coulter collected back-to-back doubles with one out in the seventh to cur Gonzaga's lead to 5-4. After Paul Gran walked, Murphy just missed a home run with a laser off the left field wall that resulted in a RBI-double to bring home the tying run.
