Stanford Travels To Tempe For Pac-10 Championships

The Stanford Track and Field teams will head to Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. this Fri.-Sat., May 16-17 to compete at the Pac-10 Championships. The Cardinal will look improve their season marks as well as post a high team finish at the conference championships.
In the latest USTFCCCA rankings the Stanford women are ranked eighth nationally, while the men are ranked 42nd. The Pac-10 is again loaded with talent with six teams on the men's side ranked in the top-25 nationally. For the women, five teams are ranked in the top-25, including No. 1 Arizona State.
LAST YEAR AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Last season the Stanford women placed second at the Pac-10 Championships while the men placed eighth. Arizona State enters the meet as the defending champion, while Oregon will try to defend its title on the men's side. The Stanford women have two defending Pac-10 champions returning to the meet. Those athletes are Erica McLain in the triple jump and Teresa McWalters in the 10,000 meters. For the men, 1,500 meter champion Russell Brown returns to attempt to defend his title.
Stanford has several athletes who rank in the top-10 in the Pac-10 in many events. Each of these athletes will have a chance to earn big team points for Stanford this weekend.

The first event of the Pac-10 Championships has already taken place with the heptathlon and decathlon competitions being contested last weekend. Stanford is currently tied for second place in the women's competition with nine points. They were led by a fourth place finish from Lauren Stewart and a fifth by Whitney Liehr in the heptathlon. The men are in third place with six points after Josh Hustedt finished third in the decathlon.
