Big Weekend Ahead for Cougars at Lake Natoma

What's Happening This Week: The Washington State rowing team hits the water Sunday, May 18, at Lake Natoma, Calif., facing off against a full line up of ranked competition at the Pacific-10 Conference will begin at 8 a.m. with the women's varsity four heats...second varsity eight will begin at 8:20 a.m. followed by the varsity eight heats at 8:40 a.m....novice eight round out the morning schedule with heats beginning at 9 resumes Sunday afternoon with novice eight finals at 1:10 p.m....varsity eight petite final will begin at 1:40 p.m. and the grand final will begin at 3 p.m...Gonzaga, Sacramento State, UC Davis, and Western Washington will also compete Sunday but will not be scored.

The Field: All seven of the Pacific-10 varsity eight boats are ranked in the CRCA/US Rowing poll's top automatic NCAA bid, awarded to the conference champion, is on the line for the No. 4 Cougars as the boat looks to take on No. 1 California, No. 10 Stanford, No. 12 USC, No. 14 Oregon State, No. 15 Washington, and No. 20 UCLA.

Scoring: Points are scored in varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight competitions toward the Pac-10 Championship...varsity eight winner scores 40 points with each subsequent place reduced by four points (i.e. 36 for second, 32 for third, etc.)...second varsity eight winner scores 20 points, with each subsequent place receiving two points less...varsity four and novice eight winners score 10 points and each subsequent place receiving one point less.

Head Coach Jane LaRiviere: 'We have to do our best. We have to go down there and keep our heads in the boat, execute our plan and nobody else's.'

2007 Pac-10 Championships: Last year Washington State placed seventh at the Pacific-10 Championship...varsity eight missed the grand final by just over three and a half seconds...second varsity eight and varsity four both placed sixth...WSU finished the event with a total of 38 team points...first place USC finished with a total of 63.
