UCLA Rowing Set to Compete at 2008 Pac-10 Championships

May 15, 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team concludes its regular season at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships on Sunday, May 18, on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. A strong performance by the Bruins on Sunday can propel the team to a berth in the NCAA Championships, slated to take place in Sacramento from May 30 through June 1.

Sunday's action at the Pac-10 Championships gets underway at 8 a.m. with the first of two women's varsity four heats. The second varsity eight races are slated for 8:20 and 8:30 a.m., respectively, while the varsity eight crews take to the water at 8:40 a.m. The morning's events are rounded out by two women's novice eight races, beginning at 9 a.m.

The afternoon's racing features Petite Final and Grand Final races in all events. The women's novice eight Grand Final is slated for 2 p.m. The women's varsity four race takes place at 2:20 p.m., and the women's second varsity four Grand Final gets underway at 2:40 p.m. The afternoon concludes with Grand Final races for the men's varsity eight at 2:50 p.m. and the women's varsity eight at 3 p.m.

Sunday's team racing totals are determined by a point system. The women's varsity eight first-place program accrues 40 points, and each subsequent finish earns the next highest total in four-point increments (second place earns 36 points, third place earns 32 points, etc.). The second varsity eight champion nets 20 points, and each following team gains the next highest total in two-point increments. Ten points are awarded the top freshman/novice eight crew and top varsity four boat, and subsequent finishers earn one less point.

Last season, the Bruins raced to a fourth-place team finish at the Pac-10 Championships. Seven Pac-10 programs will hit the start line, each attempting to earn the Conference title for their institution. Washington and USC, whose respective men's and women's squads claimed the 2007 Pac-10 titles, will go head-to-head against California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, and Washington State. In addition, four non-Conference entrants - Gonzaga, Sacramento State, UC Davis and Western Washington - will partake in the women's contests but will be ineligible for regatta scoring.

The Bruins will also enter one novice four crew in Saturday's Pacific Coast Rowing Championships. UCLA's lineup on Saturday will feature Carolyn Johnson (stroke), Katrina Darracq, Sarah O'Leary, Molly Dallmar (bow) and Jacqueline Ellis (coxswain).
