Merry Takes First Loss As ASU Beats UW, 13-3

May 16, 2008

TEMPE, Ariz. - Washington pitcher Jorden Merry suffered his first loss of the season as No. 3 Arizona State jumped out to a big early lead and cruised to a 13-3 victory in the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 series Friday night at Packard Stadium.

Merry, a junior from Pasco, fell to 8-1 on the season with easily his roughest outing of the year. He pitched just two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits as Washington fell to 31-18 on the season and 10-9 in Pac-10 play. The UW fell into a fourth place in the conference, a half game back of idle California.

Arizona State remained atop the Pac-10 standings with the win, improving to 42-9 overall and 13-6 in the conference.

Devils starter Mike Leake (9-1) picked up the win, limiting the Huskies to a run on five hits over his eight innings of work. ASU got four hits and four RBI from first baseman Kiel Roling, and catcher Petey Paramore drove in four and added three hits.

ASU jumped out to a quick lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. With two aboard, Paramore blooped two-out RBI single over the bag at third base to drive in one. After a walk loaded the bases, Roling hit a fly ball to that Husky right fielder Andy Lentz lost in the lights, allowing it to drop for a three-run double.

The Devil kept at it in the second. After a pair of singles, Jason Kipnis belted his second double in as many innings to drive in one run. Brett Wallace followed with a sacrifice fly to plate another, giving Arizona State a 6-0 win.

In the third, Arizona State tacked on three more. Roling singled to notch his fourth RBI and Ryan Sontag's two-out single plated two more, making it 9-0. ASU scored a single run in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead.

Washington scratched its first run in the seventh. Troy Scott missed a home run by a foot and settled for a long double. After a groundout, Brett Wilcox singled to drive in Scott.

However, after the UW run, ASU replied in the bottom of the seventh as Paramore drilled a three-run homer to make it a 13-1 score.

In the ninth, the UW added two more runs on a two-out single from Michael Burgher. Lentz had three hits and a walk to lead the Husky hitters.

The Huskies and Sun Devils continue the three-game set with a 6:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. Fans can catch a live broadcast of both games on the Dawg Channel at
