UCLA Baseball Routs Washington State, 10-0, in Season Opener

LOS ANGELES - Left-hander Tim Murphy (4-6) scattered two hits in seven scoreless innings, and Cody Decker capped off a seven-run sixth inning with a two-out grand slam to lead the UCLA baseball team past Washington State, 10-0, in a Pac-10 contest at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday evening.

Murphy pitched five no-hit innings to open the ballgame and finished the evening with eight strikeouts and three walks against the visiting Cougars (28-23, 6-13 Pac-10).

Decker went 1-for-4 with one grand slam and one walk, tying his season high with four RBI. First baseman Casey Haerther went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Second baseman Alden Carrithers was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI and reached base safely in all five plate appearances - two singles, two hit-by-pitches and one walk.

Washington State left-hander Matt Way (3-4) absorbed the loss, surrendering three runs and five hits in five innings. Way recorded six strikeouts and issued five walks.

The Bruins scored once in the first inning on a solo homer by center fielder Blair Dunlap and added another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to right by catcher Brent Dean.

UCLA (27-23, 9-10 Pac-10) took advantage of three two-out walks in a seven-run sixth inning. Carrithers drew a bases-loaded walk before Haerther lined a base-hit through the left side, scoring two runs. After shortstop Brandon Crawford reached on a fielding error, Decker dealt the big blow, a two-out grand slam to left field.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, UCLA added one more run on a bases loaded groundout by Weisser.

The Bruins and Cougars resume their three-game series Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's ballgame will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net (FSN Prime Ticket in the Los Angeles area). Barry Tompkins and Jerry Kindall will have the call live from Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
