USC Takes Game One Against Oregon State, 5-3
May 16, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore right-hander Brad Boxberger (Tustin/Foothill HS) struck out Ryan Ortiz to halt a ninth inning rally as the USC Trojans defeated the Oregon State Beavers, 5-3, in the Pac-10 Conference series opener. The Beavers scored three times in the ninth and had the tying run at first as Boxberger picked up his second save on the year as USC registered its 700th victory at Dedeaux Field since the field's inception in 1974.
Tommy Milone (6-5) almost went the distance for the Trojans, throwing 8 2/3 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.
USC improved to 25-26 and 8-11 in Pac-10 play while Oregon State fell to 25-21 overall, 11-11 in conference.
Senior first baseman Derek Perren (Chatsworth/Granada Hills HS/L.A. Pierce College) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI while sophomore catcher Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Trojans.
Daniel Robertson was 3-for-4 with a home run for Oregon State while Chris Hopkins had two RBI in a 2-for-5 night.
Stock put the Trojans on the board in the third with his fourth home run of the year with a solo shot to right. Nick Buss then rifled a double down the right field line, but was thrown out at third when Roberto Lopez hit a ground ball to short. Grant Green walked to put runners at first and second and Perren followed with a two-run double to right to give USC the 3-0 lead.
Anthony Vasquez walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth and advanced to third on Mike Roskopf's single. Hector Rabago struck out as Roskopf stole second. Stock then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Vasquez and Buss hit an infield single with Roskopf making a heads-up running play to score with USC taking the five-run lead.
Milone worked out of several jams throughout the game as Oregon State put a runner at third in the first and second innings, but could not score off the junior lefty. Robertson hit a one-out home run in the ninth as Milone allowed his first homer this season (89 1/3 innings). Milone ran out of gas after giving up back-to-back singles to pinch hitter Dale Solomon and Joey Wong. Freshman Ryan Cabral came in and gave up a walk to load the bases before Boxberger entered the game. On a two-strike count, Hopkins blooped a two-run single to center for a 5-3 USC lead, but Boxberger followed with the strikeout.
The series continues tomorrow with a 1:30 p.m. start and concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start. Both games will be broadcast live via video webcast on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
