California Blanks Fresno State, 3-0
May 17, 2008
Fresno, Calif. - California advanced to Sunday's winner's bracket with a 3-0 victory over the No. 1-seeded (No. 16 nationally) Fresno State Bulldogs on another hot Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium in the NCAA Fresno Regional. Cal takes on the winner of game five (Fresno State vs. winner game four) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the double-elimination format. Game seven is the 'if necessary game' slated for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday as well.
Sophomore all-conference and all-region performer Marissa Drewrey was sensational yet again, yielding just six hits (no walks with 10 strikeouts) for her 28th win in the circle. This was the tenth time this season that Drewrey has fanned 10 or more batters in a game.
Cal broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with all three of its runs to take a 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Taylor Kelly singled on a 3-2 pitch and quickly advanced to second after Valerie Arioto drew a walk. After a strikeout, Gina Leomiti drew a walk, before Bernice Masaniai tapped a single to right field (and advanced to second) to plate Kelly and Arioto. Katie Vickers followed with a sacrifice single to score Leomiti.
Drewrey left no doubt in the top of the seventh inning, retiring all three FSU batters she faced.
Erika Racklin tied Keri Kropke's season-single record with her 28th stolen base in the bottom of the first inning. Drewrey tied Michelle Granger (1993) for the second-most starts in a season with 44. This was Cal's fourth straight postseason victory over Fresno State dating back to the 2000 Regional.
40-game winner Morgan Mellow suffered just her eighth loss of the season for the Bulldogs allowing all three runs with six strikeouts.
