Tempe Regional Game Five Quotes

Arizona State

Clint Myers

On the firepower of the offense:

'This is a very good ball club. They win despite the coaching; they are talented, aggressive, intelligent and they work very, very hard and I'm very demanding as the players can attest to. Again, the expectations that we have are what you saw. We're a well-hitting ball club and we prepared very hard for this Regional. Kudos to their ability and their performance.'

On facing Northwestern next weekend:

'They are a good and well-coached ball club. They have a high ranking, and they had a good series with DePaul and we're going to have to go out and play ArizonaState softball like you saw today. Well disciplined at the plate, good defense and great pitching. When you get to the Super Regionals, you're talking about 16 very good teams, so you have to play well.'

Kristen Miller - Sr. - C

On the grand slam hit:

'Their pitcher had thrown me first pitch change-up every at-bat. Coach Wagner [Associate Head Coach Robert Wagner] told me he thought I was going to see it, so I thanked him afterwards for the advice as he was right and it worked out.'

Katie Burkhart - Sr. - P

On her approach to Hawaii's hitters:

'I went in with the plan that I was just going to go at them hard and I wasn't going to let down and I think it worked well. Miller behind the plate called a great game both days and we got them to pop up and do what we wanted them to do.'

On possibility of wrapping her career with an NCAA Championship:

'That would be awesome. I think that would sum up my softball career and complete everything I and the team have worked for in my four years here.'

Bob Coolen

Opening statement:

'ASU has way too much firepower for us. They have an amazing squad one through nine and one of the best pitchers that we've seen all year. Which resulted in the same story as yesterday, just two runs shorter.'

On the challenge of overcoming ASU:

'Kate [Robinson] was frustrated and threw some pitches that played to the strength of some of the hitters. Jess [Morton] came in and settled down until she started leaving them hanging. Her change-up for a grand slam was left up and their girl knew just how to adjust hit it.'

Experience of this weekend:

'Last year's success was amazing, but it put a bull's eye on us and we're not the same team. We lost some key players that you can't overcome and be the same team. We did what we had to do to get here and a lot of the players picked it up and we didn't bow down. I give credit to the seniors and we started hitting the ball well which was indicative of how we were last year.'

Clare Warwick - Jr. 3B

On preparing to face Katie Burkhart:

'We didn't want to have the same outcome as yesterday so we tried to take the positives from yesterday and bring them more into today. She was still as effective though, she kept the score at zero and that's what she's out there to do.'

On the implications for next season:

'We've taken our experience and built on it and when we regain some of our players next year, we're looking forward to it because we know we can be a great team. It's hard when you have one goal in mind and you don't reach it, but in terms of experience and what we'll take into next year, it's not a lost cause.'
