The No. 12 Women of Troy Finish at the Pac-10 Championships

May 18, 2008

The No. 12 Women of Troy, defending Pac-10 champions, participated in the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.

The regatta showcased a lot of great rowing talent, with all of the Pac-10 women's crews being ranked in the top twenty in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/U.S. Rowing Varsity Eight poll.

The Women of Troy coasted through the morning session, which consisted of qualifying heats for the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight races. There were two heats for each race and the top three in each heats go on to the grand final in each race. USC qualified for the grand final in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races. The novice eight qualified for the petite final.

In the afternoon, the Women of Troy varsity four boat started things out right, by placing third in the grand final with a time of 7:51.0. Washington won the gold medal with a time of 7:39.6 and California finished in second with a time of 7:43.0.

The second varsity eight started out the grand final strong, but lost steam around the 1,000 meter mark and dropped to finish with a time of 6:59.8. California finished in first with a time of 6:50.9, Oregon State earned the silver medal with a time of 6:52.3 and Stanford rounded out the top three finishing at 6:54.6.

The varsity eight had a strong showing and were in the race up until the end, battling with Washington State for the third position. They finished in fourth with a time of 6:46.3. Washington State beat them out for third with a time of 6:44.7, Stanford earned the silver with a time of 6:42.7 and California won the gold at 6:38.8.

The novice eight finished the petite final with a time of 7:47.8.

Overall the Women of Troy finished with 50 points for the regatta. California claimed the Pac-10 title with 79 points, Stanford finished in second with 61, Washington State claimed third with 59 points, Washington finished fourth with 57 points, Oregon State got fifth with 51 points, USC sixth with 50 and UCLA seventh with 35.

Head Coach Zenon Babraj said, 'The varsity four performed at a good level. I felt that we had a chance to finish either two or three, and we got third.'

Babraj felt that the biggest disappointment of the day was the second varsity eight. 'I felt that they at least could have been in the middle of the pack, but the weather [106 degree heat] and the tough competition got the best of them. They could not respond after 1,000 meters.'

In the varsity eight race, not only was the heat a factor, but the wind kicked up and Babraj felt that the varsity eight squad did a good job, but he would have liked to have seen the race in other weather conditions. 'I feel like if it was a different day with different conditions we could have come out with a different result.'

Overall, Babraj was a bit disappointed with the outcome, but he knows the Pac-10 is a strong conference. 'There is very tough competition in the Pac-10. All of the coaches recruit well and many of the squads have great depth.'

The Women of Troy will be following the NCAA selection show intently on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 2 p.m. when the crews that will make it to the NCAA Championships May 29-31 in Lake Natoma, Sacramento, Calif. will be announced.
