UCLA Baseball Sweeps Washington State With 2-1 Victory

LOS ANGELES - Catcher Brent Dean knocked home the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday afternoon, leading the UCLA baseball team past Washington State, 2-1, in the Bruins' final regular-season home game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Dean was 2-for-4 at the plate in the Pac-10 victory, and shortstop Brandon Crawford went 2-for-3 with one run. UCLA (29-23, 11-10 Pac-10) also received hits from second baseman Alden Carrithers, third baseman Jermaine Curtis and first baseman Casey Haerther.

The Bruin scored both runs in the fifth inning with two outs. With runners aboard first and second, Dean's single through the left side of the infield sent home right fielder Gabe Cohen. Second baseman Alden Carrithers followed with a base-hit up the middle, scoring center fielder Tim Murphy.

Sunday's victory completed UCLA's first three-game series sweep against Washington State (28-25, 6-15 Pac-10) since 2000 (April 28-30).

Left-hander Gavin Brooks (6-2) earned the victory, scattering four hits in 5.2 scoreless innings. Brooks registered three strikeouts and issued seven walks. Washington State right-hander Chad Arnold (2-6) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs (both unearned) and six hits in six innings. Arnold tallied seven strikeouts without issuing on walk.

Right-hander Jason Novak registered his third save of the season, limiting the visiting Cougars to one run and one hit in 3.1 innings of relief. Novak struck out two hitters and issued three walks.

Washington State scored its one on a solo homer by shortstop Paul Gran with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Second baseman Travis Coulter and left fielder Scott Suttmeier each totaled two hits for the Cougars.

UCLA returns to action in its final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, May 20, playing at No. 8 Cal State Fullerton (35-17).

Game Notes: Sunday's contest marked the final home game for UCLA's four seniors - Alden Carrithers, Brent Dean, Brady Dolan and Mickey Weisser...each senior was honored in a special pre-game ceremony...Brandon Crawford notched his 16th multi-hit game of the season...Dean finished the week hitting 4-for-9 (.444)...UCLA's remaining regular-season schedule includes Tuesday's night game at Cal State Fullerton and a three-game Pac-10 series at California (May 23-25).
