The championship season will official kick off for the UA track and field team on Friday as they participate in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Tempe at Joe Sellah Track in Sun Angel Stadium.
The team will send a total of 41 student-athletes to the meet (21 men, 20 women) in what UA head coach Fred Harvey feels could be on of the best all-around Pac-10 Championships in recent memory.
Despite the challenge ahead, Harvey says he has a lot of confidence in his team heading into the weekend and feels that his athletes are ready to face it.
'There are not a lot of pessimistic attitudes heading into this weekend,' Harvey said. 'You go from event to event, athlete to athlete on this team, and they are going there with a purpose'
'There is a sense of understanding as to what needs to be done.'
The meet will feature a very strong field on both sides of the competition and a number of teams could end up winning the whole thing.
'There's about six teams who literally on the men's side that could get on a roll and any of them could win it,' Harvey said. 'We have to be in the upper half on the Pac-10 because we have too many people who can score points and if they don't than we didn't do what we came to do.'
The women's side, which has been plagued with injuries throughout the outdoor season, will have to put together a nearly perfect meet according to Harvey in order to overcome the injury bug and place competitively in a very tough female division.
