UCLA Baseball's Tim Murphy Captures Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week Honors
May 20, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior left-hander Tim Murphy has earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season after having notched the win in Friday's 10-0 victory against Washington State and his first save of the spring last Tuesday in a 6-4 victory at No. 12 UC Irvine.
In two appearances last week, Murphy tossed 7.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits while totaling nine strikeouts and limiting the opposition to a .077 batting average.
Murphy limited Washington State to two hits on Friday evening, pitching seven scoreless innings and recording eight strikeouts in the Bruins' Pac-10 series opener. Murphy's effort on Friday helped pave the way for UCLA's three-game series sweep of the visiting Cougars.
The Vista, Calif., resident entered Tuesday's non-conference game at UC Irvine with the bases loaded and just one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Murphy recorded one strikeout and induced a game-ending double play to preserve the 6-4 win and earn his first save of the year.
Murphy has compiled a 4-6 record in 16 games (13 starts) this season, totaling team-highs with 97 strikeouts and 85.2 innings. Murphy's 97 strikeouts ranks second among all Pac-10 pitchers, and his 85.2 innings pitched is the fifth-highest total in the conference.
The Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor marks the second in Murphy's pitching career and is the 47th all-time selection for UCLA. Earlier this season, Murphy earned the weekly honor after hurling a complete game shutout against Bethune-Cookman before a nationally-televised audience (March 1). Two weeks ago (May 6), junior right-hander Jason Novak was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week.
