Claire Ilcinkas Advances to Second Round at NCAA Championships
May 21, 2008
TULSA, Okla. - No. 40-ranked Claire Ilcinkas became the only California women's tennis singles player left standing after the first day of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championships. The other three Golden Bears were eliminated in first round play today at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. Ilcinkas defeated Florida's Csilla Borsanyi, 6-3, 6-2 to earn her 34th singles win of the year. She will face No. 10 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech in a 9 a.m. (Pacific) match Thursday (May 22).
Cal's only seeded player in the singles field, freshman No. 4 Marina Cossou faced a tall order in facing Baylor's No. 25-ranked Zuzana Zemenova, who won the 2005 Singles title. Zemenova avenged Baylor's team loss to the Bears by beating Cossou 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets. Cal's only NCAA singles champion, senior No. 20 Susie Babos went up against No. 53 Lauren Lui of Northwestern in a hard-fought first-round match. After losing the first set 6-2, Babos bounced back to take the second by a 7-5 score. Enduring 12 games in the third set, Babos was only able to secure one point in the tiebreaker, falling 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(1) to Lui.
Senior No. 35 Cristina Visico took on Katarina Tsang of North Carolina in Cal's last singles match of the day. Tsang pulled out a 7-5 win in the first set and took the easier route to a 6-3 win in the second to defeat Visico, leaving Ilcinkas as the only Bear remaining in the singles tournament.
Cal's No. 20-ranked duo of Babos and fellow senior Stephanie Kusano are the Bears' only doubles team in the championships. They will meet No. 35 Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva of UNLV in a 4:30 p.m. (Pacific) match Thursday evening (May 22).
