O'Neill, Nevin Named CRCA West Region Coaches of the Year

BERKELEY - California head coach Dave O'Neill was named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association West Region Coach of the Year and Golden Bears assistant coach Sara Nevin was named the CRCA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the rowing organization announced on Wednesday. This is the fourth time that O'Neill, who was named the national CRCA Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2005, has been honored with the CRCA regional award. This is Nevin's second regional assistant coaching honor
Along with Cal assistant coach Anne Kennedy and volunteer assistant coach Elizabeth Lee, O'Neill and Nevin have led the Bears to another successful season that includes the Pac-10 team championship, conference titles in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and freshman varsity eight, the top-ranking and an unblemished record in the varsity eight, and a berth in the May 30-June 1 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships.
O'Neill earned his first CRCA regional award in 1999, his first season as Cal head coach, when he led the Bears to their first appearance as a team in the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships (Cal finished 6th) and to a second-place showing at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships. He and Nevin earned regional awards in 2004 when Cal won its first Pac-10 title and placed fourth at NCAAs. O'Neill collected regional and national CRCA Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 when Cal won its first NCAA crown and its second Pac-10 championship.
The Coach of the Year Award is intended to recognize a head coach that fits one or more of the following criteria: Outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
The Assistant Coach of the Year award is designed to recognize an assistant coach or associate head coach who meets one or more of the following criteria: Outstanding commitment to his/her program, made a significant impact on the success of his/her program and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
The award winners below are now eligible to win the National Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year Awards to be voted on in June.
