UCLA Baseball Edged by No. 6 Cal State Fullerton, 12-8

FULLERTON, Calif. - The UCLA baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision in a back-and-forth contest to No. 6 Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday evening before 2,272 fans at Goodwin Field. Second baseman Alden Carrithers reached base in each of five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks and one hit-by-pitch in the non-conference loss.

Cal State Fullerton (36-17) took advantage of four Bruin errors and overcame a 7-5 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning, before adding one run in the seventh and three more in the eighth. The Titans were led at the plate by catcher Dustin Garneau, who went 2-for-3 with one homer, two RBI and two runs. Third baseman Joel Weeks was 2-for-5 with one round-tripper, two runs and one RBI. Second baseman Joe Scott went 3-for-4 with one run.

Titan left-hander Jason Dovel (3-2) earned the victory, tossing 0.2 scoreless innings in relief. UCLA left-hander Rob Rasmussen (0-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering three runs (one earned) and four hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

Tuesday's game featured four lead changes. The Bruins (29-24) captured the first lead, scoring one run in each of the first and third innings. Cal State Fullerton scored four runs in the third inning, and UCLA answered with a two-run fourth to tie the game, 4-4. The Titans regained the lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth.

UCLA claimed its second lead of the game with a three-run sixth to assume a 7-5 advantage. Right fielder Chris Giovinazzo, who finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs, belted a one-out triple off the right field wall and scored on a single up the middle by center fielder Blair Dunlap, who was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. A fielder's choice by Casey Haerther with the bases loaded sent home third baseman Jermaine Curtis. Dunlap raced home on a wild pitch, scoring UCLA's seventh run.

Cal State Fullerton took an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded following two singles (one bunt) and a throwing error, Scott lined a single to left, scoring left fielder Gary Brown. A sacrifice fly by shortstop Christian Colon sent home Weeks. Right fielder Erik Komatsu lined an RBI-single to right-center field, scoring Garneau as the go-ahead run.

The Titans added one run in the seventh on a two-out single up the middle by Garneau, sending home Brown. Cal State Fullerton extended its margin with three runs in the top of the eighth inning, two of which came on a two-run homer by Colon.

UCLA concludes its regular season at California with a three-game Pac-10 series beginning Friday, May 23. First pitch at Evans Diamond is slated for 2:30 p.m. Game time on Saturday and Sunday is 1 p.m.
