Amanda Fink Heads Into NCAA Round of 16

May 22, 2008

USC junior Amanda Fink breezed through her singles action with another straight-set win at the NCAA Singles Championships at Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The No. 6 seed blasted Northwestern's Lauren Lui 6-1, 6-0 in Thursday's Round of 32 match to punch Fink's ticket to the Round of 16. Fink's first NCAA singles win - a 6-4, 6-0 win over Florida's Julie Cohen yesterday - marked Fink's 100th career singles victory. Fink is now set up to make her second career appearance in the NCAA Round of 16, last reaching the final 16 as a freshman in 2006. This year, Fink will face 9-16 seed Megan Moulton-Levy of William and Mary in the Round of 16 on Friday (May 23).

After making an impressive comeback to win her Round of 64 match on Wednesday, USC sophomore Gabriela Niculescu came up short of a repeat comeback effort on Thursday. Niculescu fell 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to Miami's Laura Vallverdu to finish off Niculescu's season singles record at 31-12.

Also falling in the Round of 32 on Thursday was USC senior Lindsey Nelson. The two-time NCAA singles finalist was topped 6-2, 7-6 (3) by Duke's Reka Zsilinszka on a windy day in Tulsa. Nelson closes out her USC playing career with a 105-40 overall singles record, having made trips to the NCAA Singles Tournament all four years and standing out as one of the most successful Women of Troy in history - a two-time Honda Award finalist and All-American and the 2007 Pac-10 Singles Champion as well as a Pac-10 All-Academic selection.

Fink and Niculescu also pulled double duty on the day, opening up their run at NCAA Doubles as a 5-8 seed. Fink/Niculescu faced off against Tennessee's Whoriskey/Zubor in Thursday's Round of 32 and was edged out in the first set tiebreaker before barreling back into control with two strong wins in the next two sets. Fink/Niculescu posted a final winning score of 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 over the Tennessee pair to move into tomorrow's Round of 16 against either Gantcheva/Nedeltcheva of UNLV or Babos/Kusano of Cal.
