Bruins to Begin Final Day Tied with Trojans

May 22, 2008

The second-seeded UCLA women's golf team will enter the final day of competition at the 27th NCAA Women's Golf Championship tied for the lead with top-seeded USC at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course.

Both teams finished Thursday's play tied at 16-over par and each team left two golfers out on the course when play was called because of darkness. The day began at 7 a.m. for half the field that did not finish the third round, and there was a short weather delay in the morning round.

The scheduled 12:30 p.m. shotgun start for the third round began 30 minutes late and 15 minutes later the field was called off the course because of a lightening warning. When play resumed, the Bruins got hot and held a three-stroke lead at the turn.

The UCLA lead evaporated when the Bruins played the 11th hole in five-over par producing a three-stroke swing. USC held the lead through much of the back nine until the later holes when the Bruins recorded birdies at the 17th and 18th holes.

Denver, Arkansas and Arizona State were tied for third place at 28-over par, but none of those teams had finished the third round either. In all, eight teams remained unfinished.

Players needing to complete the third round will start at 7 a.m. MT on Friday. The fourth round will begin at 8 a.m. MT.

Individually for the Bruins, junior Tiffany Joh was one stroke off the lead at one-under par 215. Joh posted an even par 72 on Thursday. Sophomore Sydnee Michaels was sixth at 218 (+3) after carding a 75 (+3) in the third round. Freshman Glory Yang was tied for 15th at 223 (+7) following her round of 75 (+3).

Junior Maiya Tanaka has two holes to play and was two-over par. Her score was particularly significant because freshman Maria Jose Uribe was five-over par with one hole to play and hers would likely be the non-counting score.

Arizona State's Azahara Munoz was the tournament leader at two-under par 214 following a third round score of 73 (+1).
