May 22, 2008
Stanford, Calif. - Head Coach Paul Ratcliffe has announced the schedule for the 2008 Stanford Women's Soccer team. Competing in the very competitive Pac-10 conference, the Cardinal will battle for the Pac-10 Championship and look to improve on last season's Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Cardinal played impressively during their 2008 spring schedule by not allowing a goal in a full-sided game. They ended their spring schedule by defeating rival Santa Clara 2-0 behind two first-half goals. The 2008 schedule looks to be one of the toughest in the country with the Cardinal taking on many of the nation's best programs.
Stanford opens the season with three home games beginning with the University of the Pacific on Sunday, August 24 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal will host Navy on Friday, August 29 and will conclude the three-game set with Boston College on Sunday, August 31.
Stanford will then travel to Athens, Ga. to compete in the Nike Invitational Challenge on the campus of the University of Georgia. The Cardinal will face off against two SEC schools, Auburn on Friday, Sept. 5 and host Georgia on Sunday, Sept. 7.
One week later the team returns home for the Stanford Invitational, hosting North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 12 at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. This match gives Stanford an opportunity to play against a premiere program in women's soccer in the 18-time NCAA Champion Tar Heels. The Cardinal will also host UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, Sept. 14 in the Stanford Invitational.
The following weekend Stanford heads to the SCU/adidas challenge to take on Yale and Cal Poly. These two matchups will take place on Friday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 21.
Stanford hosts Saint Mary's on Friday, Sept. 26 and will take on the Santa Clara Broncos on Friday, Oct. 3 in the yearly matchup against their Bay Area rivals. Last season's 0-0 tie brought out a season-high 2,672 fans to Laird Q. Cagan Stadium in the highly- anticipated matchup. This season's meeting moves to Buck Shaw Stadium starting at 7:00 p.m.
The always-challenging Pac-10 schedule begins on Friday, Oct. 10 with visits from the Oregon schools, followed by a trip to the Washington schools starting on Friday, Oct. 17.
The Arizona schools come to Laird Q. Cagan on Friday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 26, before Stanford heads down South for one of the most challenging weekends of the season.
Stanford travels to UCLA on Halloween to take on the five-time defending Pac-10 Champions and across town two days later to take on defending national champion USC. The matchup against the Trojans is scheduled on Sunday, Nov. 2 for a 1:00 p.m kickoff.
The regular season concludes with a visit to tradition rival California on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 3:00 p.m.
Stanford returns 18 letter winners including leading scorer Kelley O'Hara and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Christen Press. The Cardinal also welcomes a highly touted six-man recruiting class that ranks as one of the best in the country.
