Stanford Powers Past Huskies, 9-4
May 23, 2008
SEATTLE - No. 16 Stanford used three home runs and a solid outing from starter Austin Yount to pick up a 9-4 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a season-ending, Pac-10 series.
Washington (32-21 overall, 10-12 in the Pac-10) will have to win the final two games vs. Stanford to finish .500 in conference play and have a shot at making the postseason.
The Cardinal (32-20-2 overall, 13-9 in the Pac-10) added to their case to host an NCAA Regional with the win. Stanford, however, can finish no higher than second in the conference as Arizona State wrapped up the Pac-10 title with a win Thursday at Arizona.
Washington also hit three home runs, all in the third inning. Among them was one from right fielder Kyle Conley, who moved into a tie for third place on the UW single-season homers list with his 19th of the year.
Yount (4-3) went the distance for the win, allowing four runs on nine hits while fanning 10. UW starter Jorden Merry (8-2) suffered the loss. In his five and two-thirds innings, he allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out seven.
Stanford got on the board quickly as leadoff hitter Cord Phelps led off the game with his 11th home run of the season, belting a full-count pitch out to right for a 1-0 lead. Later in the first, after a Jason Castro single, first baseman Brent Milleville hit a home run to left, his ninth, to make it 3-0.
In the third, the Cardinal got runners on second and third with no outs but only managed a run on a groundout from Randy Molina, making it 4-0.
Washington notched its first run in the bottom of the third when senior catcher Joey Dunn led off the inning with his fourth home run of the year, a liner to left. Later in the third, after a David Bentrott infield single, Andy Lentz homered to right, his sixth of the year, to cut the lead to 4-3. Conley then followed Lentz with a shot down the left-field line, tying the game at 4-4.
The Cardinal had a great chance to get back in front when Brendan Domaracki led off the eighth with a triple off the fence, but Merry struck out the next to Stanford batters and Bradley Boyer made a great diving play at second for the final out.
Stanford did, however, go back on top, 5-4, in the fifth when Joey August led off with a double off the first-base bag, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Milleville flyout.
In the sixth, Stanford center fielder Sean Ratliff doubled, stole third and scored on a two-out error by UW third baseman Brian Pearl, increasing the lead to 6-4. After the error, Phelps drew a walk to end Merry's outing and, with Geoff Brown on in relief, August homered to right, making it 9-4.
The Huskies and Cardinal continue the series with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and the regular season comes to a close with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch on Sunday. Both remaining games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
