No. 15 Cal Baseball Loses 7-0 to UCLA

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 15-ranked California baseball team fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and never recovered, losing 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who only got three hits and were shut out for the second day in a row, dropped to 32-19-2 overall and 11-12 in the Pac-10. The Bruins improved to 31-24 and 13-10 in conference play.

Cal's junior left-hander Craig Bennigson (4-4) struggled, only lasting two thirds of an inning and giving up four runs on three hits, two hit batters and two walks. Meanwhile UCLA starter Charles Brewer was able to improve his record to 8-4 by throwing 5.2 innings with only three hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

The Bruins scored their four runs in the first inning on Brandon Crawford's RBI single and Mickey Weisser's forcing in a run by being hit by a pitch, and Ryan Babineau and Chris Giovinazzo forcing in runs with bases loaded walks. Finally Cal reliever Todd Fitzgerald (2.2 innings, two hits, one run, four walks, three strikeouts) was able to get out of the inning by getting Jermaine Curtis to pop-up to first base.

UCLA was able to add a run off of Fitzgerald in the fourth on Crawford's bases loaded walk. The Bruins then scored single runs in the sixth, on Crawford's RBI single, and the eighth, on Babineau's RBI single, off of Cal senior right-hander Alex Rollin (5.2 innings, six hits, two runs, four walks, one strikeout). Crawford finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI for UCLA. Cal pitchers were able to force the Bruins to leave 17 runners on base.

The Bears got singles from sophomore designated hitter Rich Gorman in the first inning, and junior left fielder Charlie Cutler and senior second baseman Josh Satin in the sixth inning.

The Bears will next look to salvage a series win in the third game of the three-game Pac-10 series versus UCLA, Sunday, May 25 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Cal had lost 8-0 on Friday.
