No. 16 Stanford Rallies Past UW, 8-5

May 24, 2008

SEATTLE - No. 16 Stanford rallied from a two-run deficit with three runs in the eighth inning and likely ended the Washington baseball team's postseason chances with a 8-5 win Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

The loss dropped the Huskies' record to 32-22 overall and 10-13 in the Pac-10. With only one game remaining in the season, the UW can no longer finish .500 in league play. The Cardinal clinched no worse than a tie for second place, improving to 33-20-2 overall and 14-9 in the Pac-10.

UW junior right-hander Jason Erickson (3-3) suffered the loss. He allowed five runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out seven in seven-plus innings. Stanford reliever Danny Sandbrink (1-1), who tossed four and one-third innings of relief, picked up the win. Drew Storen got the final out in the ninth for his sixth save.

Washington opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second. After Kyle Conley doubled and Troy Scott was hit by a pitch, freshman center fielder Sean Meehan came through with a two-out double to deep center, driving in two.

Stanford drew even with two runs in the fifth. After a walk and a single, Erickson got a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout for two outs, but Cord Phelps came through, lacing a full-count pitch up the middle for a two-run single.

The Huskies answered back quickly, though. Jake Rife singled to open the bottom of the fifth and junior second baseman Bradley Boyer knocked his sixth homer of the season out to right, restoring the Huskies' two-run lead at 4-2.

In the eighth, Stanford rallied to take its first lead. After back-to-back, pinch-hit singles to open the inning, Phelps delivered another single through the middle, driving in one run and ending Erickson's outing. Joey August followed, hitting reliever Paul Dickey's first offering to left for an RBI single, tying the game at 4-4. With runners on the corners with no outs, Dickey struck out Jason Castro, but Brent Milleville's sacrifice fly to center drove in Phelps to put the Cardinal on top, 5-4.

In the ninth, Stanford center fielder Sean Ratliff lined his 18th homer of the season over the right-field fence and the Cardinal added another two runs to account for the Cardinal's final tally.

In the bottom of the ninth, Meehan, who finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, hit a two-out solo homer, his fourth of the season.

The Huskies and Cardinal conclude the regular season with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
