Day One Complete At Ojai

April 24, 2008

OJAI, Calif. - The Arizona men’s tennis team sent six players to this weekend’s Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. On Thursday all six competed in singles play. Claudio Christen, Bruno Alcala, Peter Zimmer and Pat Metham competed in the Championship Singles draw and Ravid Hazi and Nate Cochrane represented Arizona in the Invitational draw.

Christen won his opening round match versus Phillip Kao of Stanford; 7-5, 6-1. Kao was Stanford’s regular No. 5 spot player. After his round one win, Christen set his eyes on moving into the quarterfinals. If he were to accomplish that, he’d have to beat USC’s Jaak Poldma. Christen battled, but ultimately lost out to Poldma; 6-2, 6-2.

Fellow senior Peter Zimmer had the distinction of facing the tournament’s top seed, USC’s Robert Farah, in the opening round. Zimmer, the Tucson native, took it to the Pac-10’s top player, but lost; 6-3, 6-4.

Bruno Alcala was a player who did not want to see his playing days at Arizona end. He was matched up with Nicolas Meister of UCLA in round one. The first set went to Meister after he won the tough tiebreaker point, 7-6 (4). Then in the second set, Alcala lost again in a tiebreaker 7-6. It was definitely a very frustrating match for Alcala, who were be remembered for his tough play all four years for the Wildcats.

In Pat Metham’s opening round match, he faced Cal’s top player Kallim Stewart. The 6’5 New Zealander was beaten in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 by Stewart. Metham can use this experience of the prestigious Ojai tournament when he focuses in as a junior next season.

On the invitational side, both Ravid Hazi and Nate Cochrane lost their first round matchups. Cochrane was beaten by Stanford’s Kevin Kaiser; 6-1, 6-2.

For tomorrow’s doubles match-ups, Christen and Alcala will team together and play Washington’s Drabble and Kuharzky while Metham and Hazi play UCLA’s Drean and Look.
