Several Buff Golfers Excelling in Summer Play

BOULDER - Several current and former University of Colorado women's golfers are participating in a number of summer events this year with many enjoying early success.


The 2008 HealthONE Colorado Women's Open is currently underway at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club and three Buffaloes are among the 122-player field.  Former Buff Erin (Kerr) Houtsma is currently tied for second after two rounds of play.  Houtsma, the 2005 Champion, was the leader going into the second round as she opened with a one-under 71 on Wednesday, but she sits five strokes behind the leader after carding a round-two score of 75 for a two-over, 146 total. 


Current Buff freshman Jamie Befort (89-80--169) and former letterwinner Jaime (Fundingsland) Sniffin (92-88--180)are in 65th and 73rd place, respectively, after the first two rounds.  The third and final round will take place on Friday, May 30th.


Colorado freshman Stephanie Simich qualified for the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links on Wednesday after carding a 71 and tying for first place at the Manakiki Golf Course Sectional in Willoughby Hills, Ohio.  Sophomore Christine Kim also tried to qualify in the Arizona Sectional but she missed the cut after shooting a 74.


Simich will compete in the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links at the Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. on July 14-19.  Houtsma and incoming freshman Emily Childs are set to compete in the final qualifier for the 2008 U.S. Women's Open on June 9 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
