Stanford Lightweights Advance to Grand Final of IRA Regatta
June 6, 2008
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The third-ranked Stanford Lightweight Eight advanced directly from the heats to Saturday's Grand Final today on the Cooper River in New Jersey at the IRA Regatta.
The Cardinal crossed the 1500 meter mark in second place behind second-ranked Princeton and ahead of sixth-ranked Harvard and last years national champion seventh-ranked Bucknell. Although the margins between the boats increased throughout the race, the places remained the same. Stanford crossed the finish line in a time of 6:56, the third fastest time of the day.
'The goal was to qualify for the grands and avoid the reps,' said head coach Al Acosta. 'We haven't had a tough race in while, so it was good to get this one out of the way without any major issues.'
The participants for Saturday's 2:27 pm ET six-boat Grand Final will be Stanford, Wisconsin, Princeton, Georgetown, and the top two finishers from today's repechage.
Last year, the Stanford Lightweight Eight finished fifth in the Grand Final of the IRA National Championship at the same venue. Bucknell won the event in 6:36.096, followed by Princeton (6:39.543), Wisconsin (6:40.500), Radcliffe (6:43.405), Stanford (6:44.088) and Georgetown (6:47.503).
