Stanford Track And Field Heads To Des Moines For NCAA Championships

Des Moines, Iowa - The Stanford Track and Field teams are set to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Drake University from Wed.-Sat., June 11-14. Ten women (in 12 events) and six men for the Cardinal have advanced the season-ending national championship meet.

The women enter the NCAA Championships as the No. 10 team in the country according to the USTFCCCA. They are led by NCAA West Regional champ in the long jump and triple jump, Erica McLain. McLain is also the two-time defending NCAA Indoor Champion in the triple jump and a 12-time All-American. The women also look to score points in the distances where All-Americans Lauren Centrowitz and Alicia Follmar will compete in the 1,500 meters and Teresa McWalters will compete in the 5,000 meters. In addition Stanford record holder Lindsay Allen will compete in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and freshman Alexandra Gits will compete in the 10,000 meters. The other Cardinal female with a top-10 national mark is Danielle Maier in the javelin.

The men will be led by their pair of middle-distance All-Americans Garrett Heath and Russell Brown. The duo has combined for 15 All-America honors and were both members of the 2007 indoor NCAA Champion distance medley team. Heath has enjoyed an outstanding postseason so far, winning the Pac-10 and West Regional titles in the 1,500 meters. The other returning All-American is Josh Hustedt in the decathlon. Hustedt is coming off a runner-up finish in the heptathlon at the 2008 Indoor NCAA Championships.

Last season both the men's and women's teams finished tenth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The men finished with 20 points, while the women totaled 23 points.
