Stanford Players Help U.S. National Team In Exhibition Matches With Top-Ranked Brazil

Stanford, Calif. - Five current and former Cardinal volleyball players were in action with the U.S. Women's National Team last week, as the squad played three exhibition matches in Colorado against top-ranked Brazil. Rising seniors Cynthia Barboza and Foluke Akinradewo, along with Stanford alums Logan Tom, Ogonna Nnamani and Kristin Richards were among the 19 players on the roster for the three matches.

In an opening match loss on Wednesday, 25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 17-15, Tom and Barboza earned spots in the starting lineup, and Tom led Team USA with 23 points via 20 kills, two aces and a block. Barboza added 13 points on 11 kills, while Akinradewo entered as a reserve and added five points.

In the second match, played on Friday, Team USA claimed a five-game victory, 25-21, 19-25, 29-27, 17-25, 15-11. Tom and Nnamani started at outside hitter, while Barboza and Richards both started two sets. Nnamani led the team with 19 points on 16 kills and three blocks, while Barboza came off the bench to add eight points on five kills and three blocks. Richards had three kills and a block for Team USA, while Tom tacked on two kills and Akinradewo had one.

In Saturday's final match, a 25-16, 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 15-8 loss, Barboza and Nnamani both earned starting nods. Nnamani led the U.S. with for the second night in a row with 16 points via 14 kills and two blocks, while Barboza charted eight kills.

The U.S. will next compete in the 12-team FIVB World Grand Prix in various European and Asian countries from June 20-July 13. Barboza, Richards, Akinradewo, Tom and Nnamani all remain in contention for one of 12 spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Games roster. Barboza and Akinradewo are the only two players with collegiate eligibility remaining who are competing for those spots.
