Steve Gladstone Steps Down as Men's Crew Coach
June 20, 2008
BERKELEY - Steve Gladstone, who led the University of California men's crew program to six IRA championships during two coaching stints with the Golden Bears and served as the school's director of athletics from 2001-04, announced Friday that he is leaving his coaching position to accept a post with the California Rowing Club.
Moving on to what he called a new and intriguing challenge, Gladstone will work with California Rowing Club director Tim McClaren training postgraduate rowers who are striving for the World Championships and Olympic competition.
'The past 12 seasons have been has rewarding as any in my coaching career,' Gladstone said. 'The young men I have coached and our friends that support the crew have contributed enormously to my life. I will be forever grateful to them. I do not look at this move as a retirement, but rather a shifting of coaching assignments.'
During his first term at Cal from 1973-80, Gladstone guided the Bears to three undefeated dual-race seasons, an IRA title in 1976 and a Pac-10 championship in 1979.
Gladstone returned to Cal in 1997, taking over a program that finished as high as third at IRAs just once since his 1980 departure. The Bears saw immediate success, capturing a bronze medal at the national regatta in '97 and running off a string of four consecutive championships from 1999-2002.
Gladstone's final IRA crown in 2006 was the 11th in his illustrious career, tying him with Charles 'Pop' Courtney of Cornell (1901-15) for the most varsity eight titles in the history of collegiate rowing. In all, Gladstone's Cal crews medaled at the IRA regatta 11 times in his 12 seasons since 1997 - five gold and six bronze - an unprecedented achievement in the 113-year history of the championship. Over that same period, he directed the Bears to seven of 12 Pac-10 championships.
From 2001-04, Gladstone added the director of athletics role to his duties, overseeing a department that placed ninth in the Directors' Cup for overall excellence in 2003 and '04 and won five national team championships. Among his many accomplishments was the hiring of Jeff Tedford as head football coach in December 2001.
'Although he is leaving Cal Athletics at this time, Steve's contributions to Cal and the sport of crew will be felt for generations of Golden Bears,' said Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour. 'His record of achievement is unmatched, and he has built a foundation of success that will enable Cal crew to remain one of the preeminent programs in the country. Not only has Steve instilled his high standards and ideals on hundreds of student-athletes, but hundreds of coaches and staff have benefited from his strong and determined leadership.'
Named Pac-10 Coach of the Year five consecutive years from 1998-2002 and again in 2005, Gladstone's junior varsity eight won IRA titles in 1999 and again from 2001-03.
From 1981-94 Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at Brown University in Rhode Island. His crews triumphed four times at the Eastern Sprints Championships, five times at the IRA regatta and twice at the National Collegiate Rowing Championships.
Gladstone began his coaching career in 1966 as freshman coach at Princeton for three years. He then took over as varsity lightweight coach at Harvard, leading the Crimson to four straight undefeated seasons, four titles at the Eastern Sprints Championships and, in 1971, Thames Challenge Cup and Wyfold Challenge Cup victories at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. During his tenure at Harvard, he served as the U.S. National team coach (1969 and '73) and was a selector for the U.S. Olympic team (1972).
Established in 2004, the California Rowing Club operates out of the Ky Ebright Boathouse, which served as the home to University of California men's rowing from 1924-2004 and is located adjacent to the T. Gary Rogers Rowing Center on the Oakland Estuary. The CRC offers support to the U.S. National team and provides a West Coast base to compliment the Princeton Training Center in New Jersey.
