Buehler and Barnhart Leads U.S. to Peace Queen Cup Championship
June 21, 2008
Former Cardinal standouts Nicole Barnhart and Rachel Buehler helped lead the U.S. Women's National team to a 1-0 victory over Canada in the championship game of the Peace Queen Cup. The match was played in Suwon, South Korea in front of 25,280 fans at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. The win moved the USA to 17-0-1 in 2008 with only four friendly matches remaining before the 2008 Olympic Games.
The U.S. team now returns home for a brief break before leaving for Europe on June 27 to play matches against Norway (on July 2 in Fredrikstad) and Sweden (on July 5 in Skelleftea). Head Coach Pia Sundhage will announce the 18-player Olympic roster on Monday, June 23.
Barnhart recorded a shutout in the national team's 2-0 victory over Italy, which helped the team earn a berth in the championship game. Barnhart recorded two saves in the win.
Buehler started three of the four contests on defense and helped limit the opposition to just one goal.
The game-winning goal against Canada was scored two minutes into the second half stoppage time by forward Angela Hucles. It was the second time this year that Hucles has scored a stoppage-time winner. Hucles won the Golden Ball as the Most Valuable Player in the tournament. Canada's Christine Sinclair won the Silver Ball and U.S. forward Abby Wambach won the Bronze Ball.
The win marked the second time the USA has defeated Canada by a 1-0 score to win the Peace Queen Cup, achieving the same outcome in the inaugural tournament in 2006.
