Bruins Head To Omaha For U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials

Nine current Bruins, one incoming freshman, and one former All-American will head to Omaha, Nebraska to compete at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials. The meet runs from June 29th to July 6th and will qualify athletes for the Beijing Olympic Games.

Over 1200 swimmers, ranging in ages from 13 to 42 will compete in the 13 events for men and women with the top two athletes in each event qualifying to the Olympic Games. Also, up to six athletes will be chosen from the 100 and 200 freestyle for the U.S. team.

The fastest 16 athletes from the preliminaries in each event 200 meters and shorter qualify for the semifinals, with the eight fastest athletes from those races advancing to the finals the following day. The All events 400m or longer will have a semifinal and then a final.

Former Bruin Kim Vandenberg holds the top 200m fly time of all competitors and is ranked seventh in the 100 fly. She will also swim in the short freestyle events during the meet. Joining Vandenberg on Team Bruin is Olympic medalist Amanda Beard, who is coached by UCLA's Cyndi Gallagher. Beard is one of the top breaststrokers in the U.S. and is shooting for a spot on another Olympic team.

Current Bruins competing at the Trials include Brittany Beauchan, Emily Bibb, Kirsten Byers, Lauren Hall, Julie Imagane, Carly Lyons, Dani Milligan, Anna Poteete and Sam Vanden Berge. Bibb, Imagane and Poteete will swim for Team Bruin, while all others will compete for their home swim clubs.

Incoming freshman Yasi Jahanshahi will also compete at the Trials as she swims in the 100 and 200 butterfly.
