June 27, 2008
SEATTLE - University of Washington senior men's basketball student-athlete Joel Smith is just three weeks away from completing his final elective units and officially earning his undergraduate degree in American Ethnic Studies, a degree he earned in four years.
The Lompoc, Calif. native participated in the UW's 133rd Commencement Ceremony in Husky Stadium on June 14th, will complete his final classes by the end of the initial summer term on July 23 and is in the process of planning for the next chapter in his life. Due to his redshirt season in 2006-07, Smith would have an additional season of eligibility and NCAA rules would allow him to transfer to another non-Division I institution
'We are extremely proud of Joel and the effort he put into completing his undergraduate education in four years,' said Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar. 'He worked diligently, had a great deal of commitment to academics during his four years and I am confident that he will be successful in whatever he decides to do.'
A 2004 graduate of Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., Smith lettered three seasons with the Huskies and averaged 4.4 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. He played in a total of 83 games during his career and started 11 of his 24 appearances during the recently-concluded 2007-08 season. He missed the 2006-07 season after suffering a stress fracture in his right foot.
Smith scored in double-figures on 12 occasions during his career, including career-high outputs of 15 points against Seattle Pacific and Sacred Heart during his sophomore season. Last season, he grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in UW's loss to Texas A&M in the NIT Season Tip-Off in Madison Square Garden.
