Pressley, Stevens, Alcorn Advance to Finals at Olympic Track Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Three athletes that recently competed for the Arizona State University track and field team during the 2008 season participated in the qualifying rounds of their respective events Thursday night with all three advancing to the finals of their events at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials - Track & Field in Eugene, Ore. Jessica Pressley and Sarah Stevens both placed in the Top 12 of the women’s shot put while Kyle Alcorn also moved on in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

Alcorn, the NCAA champion in the steeplechase as well as the 3,000m run indoors, ran 8:32.70 to finish fourth overall in the semifinal and advance to the final on Saturday. His time was the second-best among collegiate competitors by 0.12 seconds and puts himself in position to place among the Top 3 in the final and earn a berth to Beijing.

Pressley, the two-time NCAA outdoor shot put champion, hit a toss of 17.26m (56-07.50) to place seventh overall in the qualifying round while Stevens, the 2007 NCAA indoor champion, threw a mark of 17.01m (55-09.75) to place 10th overall to earn one of the 12 positions into the final. Also competing in the qualifying round of a field event was April Kubishta, the 2007 NCAA outdoor champion, who placed tied for 13th in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.10m (13-05.25), just missing advancement to the finals by one position.

In the lone final of the night with a Sun Devil competing, Lisa Galaviz (Aguilera) ran 9:48.27 to finish fifth overall, two places lower than the needed finish to earn a berth into the Beijing Games.

Four Sun Devils will be in action on Friday with two competing in finals of their respective events. Current student-athlete Charonda Williams will run in the women’s 200m dash qualifying round while recent graduate Brad Roth will compete in the qualification round of the men’s javelin. Former All-Americans Amy Hastings and Fasil Bizuneh run in the finals of the women’s 5,000m and men’s 10,000m events, respectively.
