Husky 1500 Pack Finishes Trials Run in Semis
July 4, 2008
EUGENE, Ore. - Incoming freshman Christine Babcock led three Husky women in the 1500m semifinals today at the U.S. Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field. The Washington trio did not advance to the final.
Babcock and current Husky All-Americans Katie Follett and Michelle Turner all ran in the second of the two semifinals. Babcock, who will join the Huskies this fall for the cross country campaign, led the way with a 9th-place finish in 4:20.00. Follett crossed in 11th-place, running 4:22.60 while Turner ran 4:30.59, her slowest time of the year and 12 seconds slower than her prelim time.
The day marks an end to the spectacular 2008 seasons for Follett and Turner. Follett set indoor school records in the mile run, 3000-meters, and distance medley relay, which Turner was a part of. The two then both finished in the Top-10 in the mile at the 2008 NCAA Indoor meet, and teammate Amanda Miller led the way with a fifth-place finish. Washington was the only school to have three All-Americans in the same event.
Outdoors, Follett ran Top-10 times in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m, and then captured the Pac-10 Championship in the 1500-meters. It was UW's first women's Pac-10 title since 2004, and first on the track since 2001. Turner then surprised many--except for her teammates--by winning the NCAA West Region 1500-meter title with Follett close behind.
Miller, who ran in the prelims on Thursday but did not advance, led the way again at NCAA's, earning All-American honors in the 1500 with a 11th-place finish.
Washington's Jordan Boase was also entered in the 200m qualifying today, but he scratched out of the race after a blister hampered him in the 400-meters earlier this week. Justin St. Clair also was scratched from the men's javelin throw field.
Tomorrow, six-time All-American and 2007 graduate Ashley Lodree will begin the qualifying process in the women's 100m hurdles.
