Stanford Frosh Eight Captures Independence Day Victory Over Cornell To Advance To Temple Challenge Cup Semifinals
July 4, 2008
HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - In an All-American quarterfinal matchup on Independence Day Friday at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-On-Thames, the Stanford Freshman Eight crew was aces once again, dealing the previously undefeated varsity men's lightweight boat from Cornell its first loss in the Temple Challenge Cup Draw. The Cardinal's victory launches it into Saturday's semifinal round, where it will face another American boat, Trinity College (Hartford), for a berth in the finals.
'Today was a gutsy race by our guys,' said Frosh Coach Pete Giese. 'Cornell was every bit the National Champions we expected and our guys showed great composure and intensity in that win. This is a young crew, but they did a lot of growing up on that race course today.'
On a day that featured tighter races than in the first two rounds, the Cardinal's one-length victory was the largest of the four quarterfinal races. The tight battle between the Cardinal and Big Red saw Stanford lead the duel by no more than a quarter of a length all the way through the 1 1/8 marker. At that point, the Cardinal was able to press ahead with a final surge that created the one-length margin and enabled Stanford to cross the line with a victorious time of 6:45.
Stanford's superb run through the Temple Challenge Cup draw continues Saturday against Trinity College, which defeated Grand Valley State in quarterfinal action Friday. Trinity claimed victory in a finishing time of 6:46.
The winner of the Stanford-Trinity College race will advance to Sunday's Finals to face the winner of Western Ontario-Harvard.
