Canadian Team Loaded with Huskies Wins at Henley

Henley-on-Thames, England - The Victoria City R.C. & Kingston R.C. captured the Grand Challenge Cup Sunday at the Henley Royal Regatta. The assemblage of Canadian rowers featured four current Huskies, one incoming freshman, and one UW alum.

Huskies in the victorious shell included seniors Will Crothers (Kingston, Ontario) and Rob Gibson (Kingston, Ontario), junior Stephen Connolly (Calgary, Alberta), and sophomore Anthony Jacob (Vancouver, B.C.). Also among the group was incoming freshman Colin McCabe and former Husky Chris Aylard.

The Canadian boat defeated USC's varsity eight in the final race, covering the 2.1 kilometer course in 6-minutes and 29-seconds, two lengths ahead of the Trojans.

USC led at both the Barrier and Fawley checkpoints, but the Canadian eight pulled assumed control over the second half of the race.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Victoria City R.C. & Kingston R.C. defeated Leander Club, a British national team, while USC reached the final with a win over a Denmark crew.

Crothers was the stroke on UW's varsity eight this season which placed second at the IRA Championships. Jacob was a member of UW's freshman eight which also took second at IRA's back on June 7. Connolly rowed in the stroke seat on the national champion varsity four, while Gibson will compete for Canada in the Olympic Games this summer.

All of the oarsmen in the winning boat are also in the Canadian National Under-23 boat that will be competing at the World Championships later this month in Brandenburg, Germany, using the Henley Regatta as a tune-up.
