TUCSON- The second week of Fall Camp started out sluggish, put picked up by the end of practice on Monday morning at Tucson High School. After a light practice on Sunday evening, the defense continued to shine in full pads on Monday, but the offense showed it was ready to build off a strong finish to Saturday’s scrimmage.

“I was pleased the way we came out,” Head Coach Mike Stoops said. “We started out slow, but picked it up later on.”

With the scrimmage from Saturday still fresh in his mind, Stoops was pleased with the overall effort.

“There were a lot of positives from the scrimmage,” Stoops said. “The key for the second week will be maintaining our focus, continuing to learn, keeping our intensity and correcting our mistakes.”

During the seven-on-seven period, the offense focused on third and short situations. Senior Willie Tuitama completed 16-of-18 passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. Of the 16 completed passes, Tuitama hooked up with eight different receivers. The leading receiver was redshirt sophomore Delashaun Dean with two catches for 47 yards, including a 40 yard touchdown. Juniors Terrell Turner and Derick Barkum each had three receptions -- Turner for 32 yards and Barkum for 18 yards.

Freshman Matt Scott completed seven-of-11 passes for 43 yards. Scott completed his seven passes to seven different receivers -- the longest play a 16 yard pass over the middle to sophomore tight end Rob Gronkowski. Freshman Robert Golden was credited for breaking up a pass down field.

The 11-on-11 team segment saw Tuitama take the majority of the snaps. He completed 11-of-17 passes for 52 yards. The senior signal caller hooked up with classmate Mike Thomas, who participated in full contact after being held out of Saturday’s scrimmage with a tweaked groin, three times for 21 yards. Junior safety, Cam Nelson had a pass break up and redshirt sophomore, D’Aundre Reed batted a ball down at the line of scrimmage. The batted ball marked the sixth consecutive day of practice that the defensive line had a batted ball during an 11-on-11 session.

Scott completed one of his two pass attempts, a five yard toss to Dean.

The offense, in the white uniforms, scrimmaged the defense for the remaining time of practice as Scott continued to get extensive reps. For the first series, Scott completed one pass in three attempts, but failed to move the chains.

In the second series, Scott completed three passes in four attempts for 31 yards. The offense moved the chains, but again went three-and-out after the first down. Reed was credited with a “sack.”

Tuitama took the reins for the third series, but had the same result. Tuitama completed one pass in one attempt for four yards. Juniors Xavier Smith and Nick Booth each had one carry for minimal yardage.

On the final two drives, Tuitama completed two passes in four attempts for eight yards. Reed had his second batted ball of the day and redshirt sophomore Joe Perkins broke up a pass in the secondary.

The Wildcats are scheduled to hold two practices on Tuesday. The first practice will be held tomorrow at 6:15 a.m. at Tucson High while the evening practice will begin at 6 p.m. Times and location are subject to change due to weather and/or field conditions.

-          Head coach Mike Stoops noted that Nate Ness sat out practices on Sunday and Monday after suffering a mild concussion during Saturday’s scrimmage. In addition, Brandon Tatum (ankle) and Ronnie Palmer (hamstring) did not practice either day following Saturday’s scrimmage. None of the players are expected to miss extended time during camp.

-          The Wildcats held a light workout on Sunday evening at the Jimenez Practice Facility. Coaches stressed fundamentals and assignments in the 90-minute practice. The team was held out of full contact work and most team segments were “walk-though” in nature. It was quality time as coaches had the opportunity to showcase formations and plays seen on film from the scrimmage and correct positioning and alignment of players.

-          Overall, coaches were very pleased with the team’s performance in the scrimmage on Saturday. Willie Tuitama mentioned that Coach Sonny Dykes was pleased with the QB’s reads and execution of plays, and were very impressed with the running game.

-          With Ronnie Palmer held out of action on Monday morning, Vuna Tuihalamaka filled in for the senior at the Mike LB position. In the secondary, safety Anthony Wilcox took reps in place of Nate Ness at free safety.

-          “I think the second week of camp is always the toughest week,” Stoops told the media following practice. “The newness of the first week of practice and the scrimmage is gone. There is so much learning from the scrimmage. We’ve got to clean up some execution and timing. I really think the second week is the most important week of camp. It’s when you start to sure-up your two-deep. You don’t rep as many guys the farther you move along in camp.”

-          Players will be concluding Summer Session II courses on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with finals. Coach Stoops stressed the importance of finishing the summer semester strong when he addressed the team following practice. He told them to, “take advantage of your time off today to get rested and take care of your studies.”

-          The special teams again focused on punts with Alex Zendejas, Kyle Day and Jason Bondzio dividing up the punts. Thomas, Keola Antolin and William Wright dropped back to return the punts.
