Six Named Academic All-Americans

Aug. 12, 2008

TUCSON – Six members of the 2008 Arizona women’s gymnastics team have been named All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women.

Included in the group are seniors Karin Wurm and Rachelle Silberg, who become the first UA gymnasts to receive Academic All-American honors in four consecutive years. Joining Wurm and Silberg are Alexis Greene, Miranda Russell, Bree Workman and Kristen Schmieder.

“I am extremely proud of these outstanding young women,” Head Coach Bill Ryden said. “They all recognize the importance of education in their lives as there is not a professional gymnastics career to look forward to like other sports have. They have dedicated themselves to achieving success both athletically and academically, and these awards signify that.”

Wurm, a native of Landenberg, Pa., recently wrapped up one of the most decorated careers of any UA gymnasts, both athletically and academically. Named an All-American in the all-around and on floor exercise during her junior campaign, Wurm was named to the All-Pac-10 team as an all-arounder for the second consecutive season in 2008.

Wurm’s most recent recognition by the NACGC/W marks the fourth straight year in which she has received Academic All-American honors. For her academic and athletic excellence, she was named a Pac-10 2008 Scholar Athlete of the Year. In addition, she was named Academic All-Pac-10 in each of the three years (2006-2008) that she was eligible for the award. A marketing major, Wurm boasts a 3.81 grade point average and is on track to earn her degree in marketing in May of 2009.

Silberg, a native of Calgary, Alberta, finished up her collegiate career as a steady contributor to the team in the gym and a stable of academic excellence in the classroom. She anchored UA’s vault lineup in nearly every meet of her career, and made a big splash as a freshman by capturing a second place finish on vault at the Pac-10 Championships in her freshman season of 2005.

Like her teammate Wurm, Silberg has been recognized by the NACGC/W for the fourth time. The academic award compliments several others in her career, including honors on the Academic All-Pac-10 First Team in 2008 and the Academic Honorable Mention team in 2006. Silberg, who completed her degree in May of 2008 with 3.65 GPA as a marketing major, has been working with Nike over the summer.

Greene, a native of Severn, Md., earns recognition by the NACGC/W for the second consecutive season. An All-Around competitor, Greene emerged as key contributor in 2008 after missing the 2007 season due to injury. She was named to the All-Pac-10 second team as an All-Arounder and set career highs in every event, including a personal best 39.175 in the all-around. A member of the Academic All-Pac-10 Second Team, Greene carries an impressive 3.77 GPA as a psychology major.

Russell, a native of Oshkosh, Wisc., also earns recognition by the NACGC/W for the second year in a row. Like her classmate Greene, Russell asserted herself as important all-around contributor during her junior season in 2008. She matched or set career highs in four of five individual categories, including her top all-around total of 39.400, which helped her earn Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week honors for Feb. 26 – March 3. Named to the Academic All-Pac-10 First Team, Russell boasts a 3.72 GPA as a Spanish major.

Workman, a native of Lansing, Mich., earns the first NACGC/W recognition of her career. A powerful vaulter, Workman is also one of the team’s top performers on the floor exercise, where she matched her career high of 9.85 in 2008. She is an elementary education major and carries a 3.50 GPA.

Schmieder, a native of Tucson, Ariz., earns NACGC/W recognition after just completing her freshman season at UA. She filled a critical void in a thin bars lineup, often competing in the No. 6 spot in the order.

The 2008 Wildcats advanced to the program’s 22nd consecutive NCAA Regional Championship. The 2008-09 academic year begins on Aug. 25 at The University of Arizona.
