SEATTLE - Northwest soccer legend Jimmy Gabriel has rejoined the Washington men's soccer staff as a volunteer assistant coach, Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger announced. Gabriel previously served as an assistant coach for Wurzberger's Huskies from 1997-2002.
'We're delighted to have Jimmy Gabriel back with us,' Wurzberger said. 'He's not just a coach, he's a friend as well. Jimmy is one of the most experienced people to have in a match situation. We think his presence, maturity and his depth of mind are going to be a plus to our team so we're happy about that.'
Gabriel's previous tenure with the Huskies was one of the most successful stints in program history as he helped UW to three-straight conference championships including the 1998 and 1999 MPSF titles and the inaugural Pac-10 crown in 2000. 'It's something I really enjoyed so when Dean asked me to come back, I said that I would,' Gabriel said with regards to his previous time with the Huskies. 'I'm looking forward to seeing the guys play, and trying to help them as individuals and as a team. If we can get them all together and playing at their best, I'm hoping they'll have a chance to go all the way and win a national championship.'
