Cats Complete Two-a-Day at Rincon Vista
Aug. 18, 2008
TUCSON- Arizona Football Team took the field at Rincon Vista Complex for the evening practice of Monday's two-a-day hoping to maintain the intensity it finished with in the morning workout.
Both sides of the ball had energy and cheered their respective sides on during the 11-on-11 team segments. The two sides got into it so much that after a screen pass to redshirt sophomore Xavier Smith, both teams started pushing and shoving each other following the play, which resulted in the whole team having a take a lap around the field as punishment handed down by head coach Mike Stoops.
During the seven-on-seven period, senior quarterback Willie Tuitama completed 14-of-15 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. He hooked up with fellow senior Mike Thomas over the middle for a 45-yard touchdown reception. Tuitama completed passes to nine different receivers and completed 11 passes in a row before a pass to junior Nick Booth was bobbled and dropped.
Freshman Matt Scott was equally as impressive as Tuitama, completing eight passes in nine attempts for 58 yards. He connected with five different receivers, but his favorite target in the drill was redshirt sophomore A.J. Simmons who had three receptions for 22 yards.
After the seven-on-seven drill, the special teams focused on downing punts inside the 10-yard line as well as the onside kick recovery team and 'hands team' to recover onside kicks.
The 11-on-11 period that brought out the high intensity in the players saw Tuitama as accurate as he was during the seven-on-seven drill. He completed 13 passes in 15 attempts for 109 yards and a touchdown. Again, Tuitama hooked up with Thomas, this time for a 25-yard touchdown. Thomas finished the drill with three receptions for 38 yards.
Redshirt sophomore Terrell Reese had four catches for 20 yards. Sophomore running back Nic Grigsby had two carries for 14 yards. Tuitama was also 'sacked' twice - once by redshirt sophomore Ricky Elmore and the other by redshirt junior Donald Horton Jr.
Scott completed six passes in 12 attempts for 74 yards during his time. He also threw a touchdown and an interception to go along with three carries for 11 yards. Scott hooked up with freshman Juron Criner for the lone touchdown. Criner was the leading receiver and finished with three catches for 44 yards.
Arizona will take the field tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. at the Rincon Vista Complex. Times and locations are subject to change due to weather and/or field conditions.
