Pre-Season Training Winds Down for Soccer
Aug. 19, 2008
TUCSON – The University of Arizona women’s soccer team is making its final preparations before it kicks off the 2008 season on Sunday, Aug. 24. The Wildcats have spent the recent weeks training hard for what they hope is a season that ends in a return to the NCAA Tournament.
Pre-season training began in earnest on August 8th as the team held two-a-day practices through August 13th. The team began its days bright and early with team breakfasts at 5:15 a.m. daily and reported to the pitch for practices from 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. Training sessions emphasized fundamentals and conditioning as well as some of the more technical points of the game.
With the second session of summer school complete, the team ventured to Red Rock Country as the Wildcats held a mini-camp in beautiful Sedona, Arizona, August 14-17. While the team practiced daily, the true value of the trip was the team bonding opportunities at the magnificent Junipine Resort. The team trained at Red Rock High School on a brand new Field Turf surface, allowing the team to train away from campus at an outstanding facility.
The team returned home to Tucson and resumed its local training with a single practice on Monday at Murphey Soccer Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. On Tuesday morning, the Wildcats held the first of two practices scheduled for the day and will continue training over the next several days.
The team is tapering down its training schedule as it begins to shift its focus to game-specific preparation for the season’s first opponent, Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.
Season and individual game tickets can be purchased in advance through the McKale Center Ticket Office Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. or online. Fans can purchase tickets in person one hour prior to kickoff at the stadium.
