Cats Ready to Turn Focus to Idaho

TUCSON – The Arizona Football team held an 80-play scrimmage tonight at Arizona Stadium in front of nearly 200 fans. The scrimmage gave the Wildcats one more chance to perform in live action before they shift their focus to game specific preparation for the Idaho Vandals beginning tomorrow.
Throughout the scrimmage, senior Willie Tuitama rotated series with freshman Matt Scott and redshirt freshman Bryson Beirne. Tuitama completed nine passes in 17 attempts for 94 yards and two interceptions. Scott completed five of 11 passes for 86 yards. He threw one touchdown and two interceptions. Scott also had four rushes for 27 yards. Beirne completed nine passes in 10 attempts for 74 yards. He connected with five different receivers.
During the scrimmage, the young defense showed the intensity and energy its coaches expect the unit to play with. The defense forced the offense into four interceptions, five sacks and six penalties. Joe Perkins, Trevin Wade, Ryan Ellis and Nate Ness all notched an interception. Ricky Elmore, Kaniela Tuipulotu, Josh Lewis, Apaiata Tuihalamaka and Jowyn Ward each registered a “sack.”
Sophomore Nic Grigsby led all rushers with seven carries for 60 yards. Redshirt junior Xavier Smith had five carries for 17 yards. Redshirt junior Nick Booth had four carries for 11 yards. And freshman Keola Antolin had six carries for six yards.
Leading the team in receiving yardage was Shawn Trowbridge, who had one reception for 55-yards. In the third to last series, the redshirt sophomore caught Scott’s pass over the middle and took it to the end zone. Redshirt sophomore Delashaun Dean had two catches for 47 yards. Sophomore tight end Rob Gronkowski had two receptions for 13 yards.
Overall, the offense produced 379 yards in 78 plays for an average of 4.9 yards per play. UA quarterbacks completed 23-of-38 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown, but threw four interceptions. On the ground, UA running backs gained 125 yards on 29 carries.
Overall, the offense had 15 drives, with four resulting in scores. The first went: 12 plays for 37 yards resulting in a field goal, second, seven plays for 56 yards resulting in a field goal, third four plays for 70 yards resulting in a touchdown and fourth 10 plays for 45 yards resulting in a field goal.
The first drive of the evening went 12 plays and covered 47 yards to result in a 32-yard Jason Bondzio field goal. The second scoring drive last seven plays going 56 yards and was capped off by a 29-yard Bondzio boot. The third scoring drive ended with the Trowbridge 55-yard touchdown, and the final scoring drive covered 45 yards in 10 plays leading to a 42-yard Bondzio field goal.
The defense had 11 stops, four interceptions and five sacks.
Arizona will return to practice tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at Rincon Vista.
